Exploitation is the systematic examination and characterisation of a weapon or munition.  It normally involves the complete disassembly of the device, including the extraction of all explosive material.

The process generally reveals how the item was designed to function and how to neutralise, disarm or destroy it safely.  However, analysis of the components often yields other important information, such as causes of operational failure or the effects of ageing on the materials.

Exploitation is a highly specialised activity involving an intimate knowledge of weapon design.  Colin King has performed exploitation on a wide variety of munitions ranging from small anti-personnel mines to large aircraft bombs, often operating in field workshops using a mobile tool kit.  This work produces images and data for the CKA and Fenix Insight technical libraries and is fundamental to other activities, such as demilitarisation programs.
